Owenie McMenamin Crowned Derry Junior 8-Ball Champion 2017

NIPPO held their first event of five Junior 8-Ball Ranking Tournaments since the organisation was set-up in January of this year 2017.

Event 1 was the Derry Junior 8-Ball Open played yesterday Saturday 23rd September in the beatiful and superb Potters Snooker & Pool Club Coleraine owened by Willie Elkin with the playing conditions and hospitality provided to all young players was first class so massive thanks to Willie for the use of his club.

The tournament was played in two groups (group of 5 & group of 6) with all group matches best of 5 (first of 3) with top two players in each group progressing into semi-finals and the remaining players going into Plate Competition which seen 110 prize-money paid out for main event plus trophy and 20 paid out for Plate Competition.

Congratulations to 11 year old Tyrone sensation Owenie McMenamin (Drumquin) who produced a brilliant performance throughout the tournament to be crowned Derry Junior 8-Ball Open Champion defeating top class junior players on route to victory.
Owenie won all his group matches with victories over D Mc Loughlin (Coleraine, 3-0), Tiernan McSorley (Dromore, 3-2), Padraig Murphy (Fivemiletown, 3-2), Oran Kneeland (Coleraine, 3-2) and the young Tyrone cueist kept his superb run of form going defeating another great junior player Adam Freeburn from Coleraine in the semi-finals with an 5-3 victory and followed that up with another fantastic win over his Tyrone Inter County team-mate Piotr Samulewicz in the final winning 6-4 to be crowned Derry Junior 8-Ball Pool Champion 2017.

Great NIPPO highlight of the tournament was the performance of two young players Gerard Francis Heaney (Belfast, aged 10 years old) and Harry McMenamin (Tyrone, aged 8 years old) who have a great futures in the game in years to come.
Both young players played very well competing against much older players with Gerard progressing to semi-finals of Plate Competition losing to the outright winner Karol Galka.

NIPPO are now bringing in a rule letting all under-12 players compete in Men's Open Ranking Tournaments free of charge giving them great opportunity to gain great experience against top adult players.
Junior players (U-18s) can also enter Men's Open Ranking Tournaments for the entry fee of 10 and this is also available to lady players for 10 entry.
