"WESTMEATH POOL ASSOCIATION" ------ Moves To New Hotel

After almost 5 years and more than 80 various pool events in The Auld Shebeen Moate; The Westmeath Pool Association has found a new home in the Newbury Hotel Mullingar. On Sunday 15th January The Newbury Hotel got its first taste of Westmeath Pool Tournament action..........



The Westmeath Pool Masters got underway at 10am with 48 players expected to show up for the days play. Martin Drew, Dwayne Egerton and Barry Mulvany beat Matty Charles, Dermot Coroon & Warren Casserly with scores of 4-1, 4-2 and 4-2 respectively.........


The first round proper got going then with the following results; Brendan McNamee bt Martin Drew 4-3, Gene Egerton bt newcomer Dean Scally 4-1, Dan Jordan bt Daly McCormack 4-3 in the shock result of the round, Tony Cleary bt newcomer Benji Geoghan 4-0, Dwayne Egerton bt Gareth Brennan 4-2, Gary Walsh bt Conor Bracken 4-2, David Burns bt Keith Mulligan 4-2, Richie Toal bt Niall Tyrrell 4-0, Steven Carmichael bt Barry Mulvany 4-2, Peter Tully bt John Joe Claffey 4-1 and Chris Monaghan bt newcomer Darren Aughey 4-0. Adrian O’Reilly, Graham Temple, Michael Scally, Niall Heffernan and Liam Claffey got a walkover to the next round.........



The tournament progressed to the second round with all matches played a quick pace, here are the results of round two; Gene Egerton bt Brendan McNamee 4-1, Tony Cleary bt Dan Jordan 4-0, Dwayne Egerton bt Gary Walsh 4-2, Adrian O’Reilly bt Graham Temple 4-1, David Burns bt Michael Scally 4-2, Niall Heffernan bt Richie Toal 4-0, Steven Carmichael bt Liam Claffey 4-2 and Peter Tully beat Chris Monaghan 4-3 in last and best match of round two with the top 8 waiting in the third round...........



The last 16 round got going around 3:30 with Number 1 seed Terry Parker defeating Gene Egerton 4-2, Number 8 seed Tom Jordan then got the better of an inform Tony Cleary with a score of 4-3. Number 5 seed and Challenge Cup winner John Brennan got the better of Gene Egerton 4-2, Number 4 seed Alan Muldarry had a tough task against Adrian O’Reilly but had enough to get through with a score of 4-2. Number 6 seed Shane Walsh secured his place in the quarter finals with a 4-1 win against Niall Hefferan. An inform Steven Carmichael hit a wall against the number 7 seed Philip Hopkins with a 4-0 defeat. Number 2 seed and European Pool Championship Qualifier winner Rob Malynn beat Peter Tully 4-2. Number 3 seed Pat Farrelly became the first seeded player to fall when David Burns won on a last frame decider having being 3-1 down...........



It was down to the quarter finals and just 8 players remain in the competition. The first match looked like there could have being an upset when Tom Jordan took a 2-0 lead against Terry Parker only for Tom to let Terry in in the third frame and then took a grip of the match to the next 3 frames and the match. John Brennan finally got the better of Alan Muldarry which John hadn’t managed to do in the past, 4-2 was the score. Inform David Burns kept the run going with a 4-2 win over Shane Walsh, and Rob Malynn completed the Semi Final line up with a 4-1 win against Philip Hopkins.........



Rob Malynn got the Semi Finals going with a good clearance in the first frame against David Burns, but that was as good as it got for Rob as David took the next 5 frames to win 5-1 and reach the final for the first time. John Brennan came back from 4-2 down in the other Semi to level the match at 4-4 only for Terry to clear from the break in the last to win 5-4...........



David got off to a flying start winning the first frame of the final, the next few frames were then shared, and with the score at 2-2, Terry got on a roll then and won the next 3 frames to win the match and the retention of the Westmeath Pool Masters title at a score of 5-2...........

EVENTS:
Westmeath Scotch Doubles Pool Challenge… Sunday 29th January @10am. €30 per team. Top 8 players can’t be teammates. Entries must be in by Tuesday 24th January @9pm. The 60-second shot clock will be implemented for this tournament as doubles matches have a tendency to take longer than singles matches..........



WESTMEATH POOL CUP:
Sunday 5th February @10am. €10 per player, Juniors and Ladies can enter at just €5. Top 8 players enter at the Last 16 round. Entries must be in by Sunday 29th January @6pm...........



WESTMEATH OPEN POOL CLASSIC:
Sunday 19th February @10am. €15 per player, Juniors and Ladies can enter at just €10. This event has an open draw for each round so the top seeds can meet in round one. Its also open to any player around the country. Entries must be in by Monday 13th February @9pm............



ROB MALYNN:
WPA Chief Rob Malynn will be competing in the European Pool Championships on the week Mon 20th-Fri 24th Feb in the Green Isle Hotel Dublin.



WESYMEATMEATH POOL CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Sunday 4th March @10am. €10 per player, juniors and ladies can enter at just €5. This is the final ranking event of the 2011-2012 season, so this is the last chance for players stake their claim for an automatic spot on the Men’s Westmeath Pool Team. Entries must be in by Monday 27th February @9pm.



COUNTY POOL TEAM TRIALS:
Mon 5th-Wed 7th March @6-10pm. The trials are contested between players placed 9th-16th in the rankings along with some wildcards maybe. There will be 2-4 place’s to be claimed.........



JUNIOR TEAM TRIALS:
Sun 29th Jan, Sun 5th Feb, Sun 19th Feb & Sun 4th Mar. Trials for the Junior team will be played on each of these days from 6-9pm with finals being played on the 5th, 6th and/or 7th March. 6 players will be selected for the Under18 team and 3 players on the Under15 team, an Under15 player can be selected for both teams.



LADIES POOL TEAM TRIALS:
Preliminary rounds of the trials will take place in various venues around the county, with the top few players from each area qualifying for the finals. Fiddlers Bar Athlone, Lough Lene Inn Collinstown and The Newbury Hotel are just some of the hosting venues. Full details to be confirmed...........
